As we are heading into an election season, I am rerunning posts that I think might be helpful. Here’s the first one. I recently had an “Aha!” about one reason why we might be having such a hard time making progress in bridging the divide. I think we might be suffering from “learned helplessness” about the conversations that we need to have. It seems like nothing we do makes a difference, so we give up trying.
How interesting to think of our overheated political system in terms of learned helplessness. It seems a little quieter now than it did in this time in the election cycle in the past. Maybe people are worn out and afraid to try. I hope that we become a more civil society and more respectful to our friends and neighbors. Elections come and go but relationships need to be able to survive and thrive through them.
