I love Gretchen Rubin’s Four Tendencies as a way to understand both my and other people’s behavior. For those who aren’t familiar with her definitions, here is a link to her description on her website. If you recognize your own and other people’s tendencies, the better your conversation might go. I have a questioner (another of Rubin’s four tendencies) in my life and I used to get into trouble in conversation with him until I realized his tendency. Now I know all I need to say is “That’s a good question” instead of trying to convince him of anything. That calms him down, makes him feel listened to, and eliminates a source of stress in our relationship. I also realized that I have a bit of rebel in me, and knowing that has helped me deal with myself.
