Are you dealing with a rebel?
I love Gretchen Rubin’s Four Tendencies as a way to understand both my and other people’s behavior. For those who aren’t familiar with her definitions, here is a link to her description on her website.
If you recognize your own and other people’s tendencies, the better your conversation might go. I have a questioner (another of Rubin’s four tendencies) in my life and I used to get into trouble in conversation with him until I realized his tendency. Now I know all I need to say is “That’s a good question” instead of trying to convince him of anything. That calms him down, makes him feel listened to, and eliminates a source of stress in our relationship. I also realized that I have a bit of rebel in me, and knowing that has helped me deal with myself.
Take the quiz and see what you. Take a guess for what tendency the people in your life are. Then look at the strategies Gretchen recommends. Or do you have any recommendations for your tendency? Try out one for yourself or for another person in your life.
