The barrier of “It’s too hard”
Another reason people give me for not doing this work — the work of healing difficult relationships — is that it’s too hard.
I want to acknowledge that it is hard to change your behavior. That’s why most people continue to repeat dysfunctional behavior. If you keep doing what you’ve been doing, you’ll keep getting what you’ve been getting.
But if you want to make changes, you can. Start by doing something small.
I’ve heard it said that to change destinations, all an airplane has to do is to make a small change. The difference in where you land can be huge.
One of my favorite authors, Gretchen Rubin, agrees, saying that small changes can make a huge difference. I think she’s right.
Or as Martin Luther King said, “You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
