This won’t work
Another resistance that I encounter to this work (and to the speech I gave this summer) is defeatism. They don’t believe that this will work.
The problems feel overwhelming.
And each of us feel helpless when we are alone. And actually, we don’t know if it will work. All we have is what experts say or people who have tried it and it worked for them.
There is some academic research that says that a movement can make a difference when it reaches 3.5% of the population. But, the other side has over 3.5% already.
If it does work, it’s going to take a long time. Beth Silvers of Pantsuit Politics has recently said that it will take a generation.
As the saying goes, “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, but the second-best time is now.”
Let’s start planting the seeds of peace. We don’t know if it will work, but we do it because it’s the right thing to do.
